Local meteorologists are predicting heat index temperatures near 103ºF for Tuesday, July 17th and are issuing a Condition Red: Heat Alert for the Lansing area.
Under these conditions normal precautions may not be enough to avoid heat injury. People with health conditions that could be made worse by heat and humidity are strongly urged to spend at least a few hours a day in an air conditioned place.
Avoid outdoor activity, especially during the hottest part of the day. Take the signs of heat-related illness seriously. For more information about heat illness visit the Center for Disease Control’s website at http://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/faq.asp.
Don’t forget to take care of pets during extreme heat events as well. Make sure they have plenty of water and a cool place to rest.
Cooling Centers will be open throughout the area on Tuesday and free rides are available to anyone with a physical and financial need through CATA, EATRAN and Clinton Area Transit. To find a cooling center or to determine if they are eligible for a free ride, residents should dial 2-1-1.
