LANSING, Mich. – The cause of death for the first person reported to have died from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Ingham County has been revised following additional testing. The deceased did not die due to COVID-19, reducing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in Ingham County to three.
Follow up testing revealed that the deceased did not have COVID-19. Other severe pre-existing conditions were the likely cause of death.
“The county and the state strive to share timely and accurate information with the public,” said Ingham County Health Officer Linda Vail. “Although great care is taken, the data is by its very nature preliminary.”
The test was re-run postmortem due to two conflicting laboratory test results, which were performed while the deceased was still alive. The Michigan Bureau of Laboratories confirmed the negative test result today. The Ingham County Health Department does not conduct in-house laboratory analysis.
