Swine Flu
Today the World Health Organization raised the pandemic alert level to five, it's second highest level. Currently, there are 90 laboratory confirmed human cases of swine flu (influenza A (H1N1) virus) confirmed in the United States in the following states: Arizona (1 case), California (14 cases), Indiana (1 case), Kansas (2 cases), Massachusetts (2 cases), Michigan (1 case), Nevada (1 case), New York (51 cases), Ohio (1 case), and Texas (16 cases) and one death reported (23 month old child from Texas). In addition, there is one probable case and 82 suspected cases in Michigan. In Mexico, there has been an increase in flu-like illness as well as deaths associated with swine flu and cases are appearing elsewhere in the world.
Swine flu is a respiratory disease with symptoms similar to regular seasonal flu, including a fever over 100 degrees and either cough or sore throat. Although many of the cases of swine flu have been mild so far, the flu can be an accute, even deadly disease. Therefore, we are encouraging people learn all they can about swine flu and to be prepared to reduce the risks to themselves and others.
On the following weblinks you will find information for residents, health care providers and others in Mid-Michigan about how our community is responding to swine flu and what you can do to be prepared.
