H1N1 Target Groups Expanded

The Ingham County Health Department is expanding the target groups to receive H1N1 vaccine. The target groups now include 1) all children ages 5 through 9 years old, 2) those who provide care for infants under 6 months of age, and 3) health care and emergency services personnel who provide direct patient care.

The target groups now include (Ingham County residents ONLY):

  • pregnant women,
  • persons who live with or provide care for infants under 6 months of age,
  • health care and emergency medical services personnel who provide direct patient care,
  • children ages 6 months through 9 years of age, and
  • children, adolescents and adults ages 10 through 64 years old who have an underlying medical condition that places them at higher risk for influenza-related complications.  These individuals must provide documentation of their medical condition such as a doctor’s note, prescription, or an empty medication container.

The target groups have been expanded so that 1) children 9 years old and younger, who need two doses of the H1N1 vaccine spaced approximately a month apart, will be fully protected from the 2009 H1N1 virus and 2) those who provide care to infants under 6 months of age avoid passing the virus onto those infants who cannot be vaccinated against the 2009 H1N1 virus, and 3) health care and emergency services personnel who provide direct patient care are vaccinated to avoid passing the 2009 H1N1 virus onto patients or vice versa.

Two upcoming H1N1 community mass vaccination clinics include:

  • Saturday, Nov. 7 at Hill Career Academy, 5815 Wise Road, Lansing from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
  • Tuesday, Nov. 10 at Pattengill Middle School, 626 Marshall St., Lansing, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm
