Emergency Preparedness

Emergency Preparedness
The Ingham County Health Department Emergency Preparedness program is committed to protecting the public’s health and safety by preparing our staff to respond to any natural or man-made public health emergency or disaster. This includes planning and coordinating with our community partners, such as law enforcement, schools, emergency management, hospitals and volunteer agencies, and providing critical information through the media to Ingham County residents before, during, and after a public health incident.
For more information on the types of public health emergencies and disasters we plan for, click on the links on the left side of the page.

How YOU Can Prepare:

Emergencies or disasters can occur with little to no warning. Follow these emergency/disaster preparedness steps to better protect yourself, loved ones, and pets:
1.       Get Informed:
a. Learn what types of emergencies or disasters you are most vulnerable to in the area you live.
  • Contact your local Emergency Manager for more information.
b. Tune your radio to WFMK 99.1 and WKAR-FM 90.5 for information in an emergency or disaster.
2.       Develop an Individual or Family Emergency/Disaster Plan:
a. Choose two places to meet:
  • Right outside your home in case of a sudden emergency, such as a fire; and
  • Outside your neighborhood in case you can’t return home.
b. Develop a Family Communication Plan with phone numbers for:
  • Places of work,
  • Schools or daycares, if you have children; and
  • Out of town contact to call, email, or text message to check in with to confirm that you are safe and check on others in your family if you are separated when the emergency/disaster occurs and are unable to contact one another.
c. Outline what you would do in an evacuation, including plans for your pets.
3.       Build an Emergency/Disaster Supply Kit:
a. Develop a minimum three day supply of food, water, and other essential items for you, your family, and your pets.
4.       Connect with your Community:
a. Register with the Michigan Volunteer Registry or sign-up to become a member of the Ingham County Medical Reserve Corp or Community Emergency Response Team to help others in need during an emergency/disaster.
