As we begin another school year, let me take a moment to thank you for the continued support and collaboration with Ingham County Health Department's Vision and Hearing Screening Program. Through this relationship, we screened over 30,000 children last year, resulting in the identification of almost 2,000 children who were referred for further evaluation and treatment.
The Ingham County Health Department (ICHD) continues to face budget constraints, similar to the challenges of local school districts. As such, we have had to examine procedures and protocol to address and implement cost-saving measures.
The Vision and Hearing Screening Program has made several changes that address those issues. Previously, ICHD has provided hard copy letters to send home to parents prior to screening students. While not required to formally obtain permission to screen children (per the Michigan Public Health Code); we feel it is important to inform parents, or for them to opt out, should they choose to.
This year, instead of providing schools with hard copies of letters, we will provide schools with tools that they can use to inform parents of upcoming screening events for both vision and hearing. The documents are provided below, and allow schools to customize them based on location and dates.
