LANSING, Mich. – Now through December 15, the health department is reminding people to enroll for health insurance and is offering free, in-person assistance to those who want help finding the best plan for their needs and budget.
The open enrollment period for the Health Insurance Marketplace is November 1 through December 15, 2017, and is a shorter enrollment period than offered in previous years. People who have purchased insurance through the Marketplace in the past should review their plan. Those who lack coverage or wish to change plans in 2018 must do so during open enrollment.
“Health insurance is important,” said Ingham County Health Officer Linda S. Vail. “None of us know what the year ahead will look like health-wise, but insurance can protect you from the unexpected. Most plans cover wellness exams and screenings, so even if you’re healthy, you receive some benefits.”
Trained and certified assisters offering free, local help with enrollment are available at the health department’s Community Health Centers and through the department’s Registration and Enrollment program at (517) 887-4306 or in-person at 5303 S. Cedar Street in Lansing. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are recommended. People may also evaluate plans and enroll themselves by visiting healthcare.gov.
