National Founder of Asthma Program to Visit Lansing on 9/29/12

LeRoy Graham, MD, founder of the national asthma screening and education program "Not One More Life" (NOML), is making a special visit to the September 29 NOML event at North Westminster Presbyterian Church at MLK and Oakland from 9:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

Based in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Graham is skilled in all areas of pediatric pulmonology, with a special interest is in the epidemiology and treatment of asthma, pulmonary complications of sickle cell disease and airway disorders requiring chronic ventilation. Dr. Graham’s past honors included Medical Professional of the Year from American Lung Association and Child Advocate of the Year from the Fragile Kids Foundation. Dr. Graham has served as chair of the Pediatric Section of the American College of Chest Physicians and medical director of Camp Breathe Easy, a summer camp for children with asthma. In founding the NOML program, his vision was to improve health impacts of asthma in the African-American community by partnering with communities of faith.

The 2012 fall NOML event in Lansing, hosted by the Mid-Michigan Asthma Coalition (MMAC) and North Westminster Presbyterian, is an information and screening event designed to identify and assist individuals at risk for asthma, especially uncontrolled asthma that might be life-threatening. Ingham County’s childhood asthma hospitalization rate is 36% -- second highest in Michigan and double the state rate of 18%.

The event includes presentations, screenings, snacks, prizes, displays and valuable one-on-one consultations with physicians and nurses who are certified asthma care specialists. The event provides information about limiting exposure to environmental triggers in home and outdoor environments, and best practices for preventing asthma attacks and managing this chronic condition. It takes approximately one hour to visit all of the stations at the event.

Ingham County Health Department is a proud partner in the Mid-Michigan Asthma Coalition, along with other non-profit and public health and housing partners, local physicians, nurses, and pharmaceutical representatives.
